Twenty pounds proves a point Miss Mostyn has always made: the finest things in Llandudno were built for the public and are still free to walk on. The promenade, the pier, the headland and the sunset have never charged admission.
The Day, Hour by Hour
9:30amCoffee from a kiosk on the promenade, then walk its full length from Craig-y-Don to the pier end. The hotel frontage is one of the finest Victorian seafronts in Britain and looking at it is free.
10:30amWalk the pier, the longest in Wales, opened in 1877. Spend a couple of pounds in the arcade on principle and lean on the rail at the end for the view back to the town.
11:30amClimb through Happy Valley gardens and on to the summit, or follow Marine Drive around the headland on foot, four miles of cliffs, seabirds and sea views.
1:00pmA bag of chips to share, eaten somewhere with a view. The bandstand benches will do nicely.
2:00pmThe free Mostyn Gallery, open Tuesday to Saturday, for an hour of contemporary art in a building that opened in 1901.
3:15pmHunt for the Alice in Wonderland statues dotted around town. There are dozens of them, from the Mad Hatter to the Cheshire Cat.
5:00pmIce creams, then wander along to the West Shore.
6:00pmWest Shore for the sunset over the Conwy estuary and Anglesey. The White Rabbit statue on the front was unveiled in 1933 by David Lloyd George.
What It Costs
| For two | Cost |
|---|---|
| Two coffees | £6.00 |
| Pier arcade | £2.00 |
| Chips to share | £5.00 |
| Two ice creams | £6.00 |
| Total (of £20) | £19.00 |
That leaves £1.00 in hand. Keep it for the bus home, or another go on the 2p machines.
If It Rains
The pier has covered shelters and the Mostyn Gallery is free and dry. If the weather is truly hopeless, the Victorian canopies on Mostyn Street let you window-shop the whole street without getting wet.
Adjusting the Budget
Spend a Little More
- Add the Llandudno Museum for £10.
- Swap the chips for takeaway fish and chips.
- Take the tram up the Orme one way.
Spend a Little Less
- Bring a flask and save the coffee money.
- Pack sandwiches and skip the chips.
- Share one ice cream, which builds character.
Miss Mostyn Advises
- Marine Drive is a road shared with cars and cyclists. Keep to the pavement where there is one and take care at the bends.
- The summit is exposed. Bring a layer even in summer.
- There are public toilets near the pier.
- Bring water and a sandwich from home and you will come back with change.
