  • Llandudno Hospital Due For £1.9 Million Investment

visit LlandudnoWhen you take a trip and visit Llandudno, you can never be too careful on your travels. You would have been in safe hands even before a recent announcement but after it, you can be completely assured.

The figure being touted is an impressive £1.9 million which indicates how the health sector is on the up in North Wales despite it floundering elsewhere. Although functional, the Llandudno base is relatively small – something that campaigners were eager to have expanded.

Their success has resulted in plenty of new additions to the hospital with the news emerging of better facilities and less of a dense feel to it as the plans to provide more space for patients and staff are put into place in January next year.

As a thriving facility, Llandudno has over 17,000 admissions each year and is right up there with the busiest in the country for its type. The general idea is that the improvements will negate the need to put further pressure on district general departments such as the ones in Bangor and Bodelwyddan.

Situated close to the town’s esteemed golf club, the hospital has offered some respite and care to locals over the past few years and is frequented by people suffering from minor injuries more than those who are in poorer health. With its expansion, the pressure on the main hospitals that deal with the more serious cases will be relieved.

The chairman of the Llandudno Hospital Action Group had this to say on the subject:

“This is long-awaited and much-needed and secures the future of the hospital. It has been all doom and gloom on the health front recently, so I’m delighted to have some good news.”

Ms. Groom added: “Our group has never given up on Llandudno Hospital and never will. We have to keep health services in local communities.”

With such a positive news story like this, it bears mentioning that the group tired constantly to achieve their cause and it just highlights what makes the people of Llandudno so special.

  • Llandudno Featured in Volkswagen Advert

If you’re contemplating whether or not you should visit Llandudno, it could be worth considering that you’ll be following in the footsteps (or rather pawsteps) of some famous dogs.

The German car company Volkswagen recently decided to shoot an advert in Llandudno that featured our furry friends whizzing about the beautiful resort town with so much of its fantastic scenery being highlighted throughout. During September, camera crews (as they so often do) came to the area to shoot the popular advertisement that has over 100,000 views already on YouTube.

With the idea behind the advert being, “there a VW for everybody”, the pooches are seen driving along some of Llandudno’s most beloved sights. The Great Orme received welcome exposure and it’s little surprise considering its breathtaking scale and the gorgeous houses that are situated below it. The promenade also features heavily and it looks like the dogs enjoyed it as much as the people there!

Just a short journey away from the illustrious town, the fun-loving pooches could also be seen veering along Marine Drive near Penrhyn Bay before they were seen gallivanting all the way down Gloddaeth Avenue in the wrong direction.

With Volkswagen due to open an exciting array of showrooms in the town for 2014, Llandudno looks set to be one of the hubs for the superb new financial growth in the car manufacturing industry in Britain after its economic upturns. A spokesperson for VW said they were quite taken by North Wales before the advert was even shot there.

“We chose North Wales because the scenery is stunning and so pretty, and because the dogs were all in this country. We thought using lots of different dogs was a charming and humorous way of getting across the fact that there’s a model of VW for everybody.”

As the dogs have all driven away and the dust has settled, the residents of Llandudno can be proud of yet another big name drawing great attention towards the Queen of Welsh Resorts.

  • Llandudno eyesore could be transformed into glorious hotel

Llandudno North ShorePlans to give a historic, derelict hotel a new lease of life are progressing well according to the owners. Many conservationists and people involved in Llandudno have welcomed the news, as many have been fighting to preserve what they see as an important part of the towns heritage.

Mostyn Estates, who recently acquired Llandudno’s Tudno Castle Hotel are hoping to launch plans to help restore this hotel to its former glory, retaining the Grade II listed façade that sits in the centre of Llandudno’s amenities, high street and shopping district.

The building has fallen into a terrible state through neglect and being abandoned, and even experienced an arson attack one year ago. Edward Hillier, Managing Director of Mostyn Estates said:

“We are at a reasonably advanced stage of design for a mixed use commercial scheme at the hotel.

“This is likely to incorporate retention of the principal frontages, and rebuilding behind these.

“We are likely to submit an application for planning consent on this revised scheme in the autumn, and are optimistic of seeing some action on site in early 2014.”

The town would benefit from the renovation of the building, especially being used as a hotel. The building sits in a prime position that allows perfect access to the Mostyn High Street, Parc Llandudno Shopping Complex and also the North and West Shore beaches of the seaside resort.

Llandudno has been growing continuously as a holiday destination, primarily for those in the UK that want a holiday by the sea. The wealth of accommodation in Llandudno has been deemed ‘spectacular’ by various top travel sites, with many of the hotels earning themselves some of the most prestigious awards in the world. • Work to start on Llandudno pier landing stage

llandudno pierWork will begin on the landing stage of the famed Llandudno Victorian pier as the attractions owner takes over the project. The responsibility of structural work has been passed on from Conwy County Borough Council, to owners Six Piers Ltd.

Delays on the project were announced early in April, putting hold on plans by Waverley Excursions to run trips from the pier in May and June. The work was started in June last year, with a £200,000 investment from Gwynt y Mor windfarm operators RWE npower renewables.

There were delays on the project that were announced early in April, putting a hold on plans by Waverley Excursions to run trip from the pier in May and June. The aim to begin with was to have the work competed by this summer, allowing ships such as the Waverley and the Balmoral to dock at the pier, and have the ability to return to Llandudno to its status as a stop-off point on seaside excursion routes.

Simon Mason, General Manager of the Llandudno Vcitoian Pier said that they are now hoping that work will be completed by September 3rd – in time for the arrival of the Waverley.

Simon Mason, general manager of the pier, said the company was looking to begin work within two weeks, and aimed for a completion date of September 3 – in time for the arrival of the Waverley.

He said: “It’s been decided it would make financial sense for it to be handed over to Six Piers, and we’re looking to have it ready by September, in time for the Waverley to come in.

“Obviously that’s quite a tight time scale, but that’s our aim.”

He added that MP Marine, which already carries out some structural and decking work on the pier, had been chosen to work on the fenders.

Jim Jones, section head for Tourism and Community Development at Conwy, said: “Work will be carried out by Six Piers and is due to start very shortly; it’s expected to take about 10 weeks in total. The aim is to complete in early September (subject to weather conditions)”.

  • Plans to improve Happy Valley in Llandudno

Happy ValleyA voluntary group has a host of plans to improve a popular beauty spot in Llandudno – Happy Valley. Parts of the Happy Valley have been neglected in recent years, and this group is working to find a way of repairing and restoring a water feature that is known to locals as The Cascade.

A voluntary group has a host of plans to improve a popular beauty spot in Llandudno – Happy Valley. Parts of the Happy Valley have been neglected in recent years and the Friends of Happy Valley Group is working hard to try and restore it, so that families can enjoy it on days of good weather.

The group are aiming to repair the pumps of The Cascade, which must be done in a way that will not harm the frogs and toads that are known to live in the environment. Replacing the water feature is liable to cost up to £30,000 and although the group are willing to do much of the work themselves, the funds required are proving difficult to gather up.

The friends group of Happy Valley have had success through getting electricity running on to the Alice and Wonderland bandstand, which opened last year. Events taking place here are set to be controlled and regulated and the first will be performances by a choir by Sound and Motion, who will appear there on June 28th from 11am to 4pm.

“We want to see families using the park more, and parents could sit at the tables while their children explore the cave,” said the Chairman.
