Conwy Mountain Walk

Miss Mostyn sends walkers to Conwy Mountain for rougher ground, bigger views and fewer promenade manners.

Conwy Mountain is for those who want something rougher and more open than the Great Orme. It sits above Conwy town and looks over the estuary, castle, coast, Anglesey and the inland hills with admirable self-possession.

The mountain rises to around 244 metres (slightly higher than the Great Orme) but its character is entirely different. The ground is open moorland and rough grassland rather than limestone, the paths are less formalised and the summit gives a panorama that makes the coastal resort towns below look rather small and rather sensible.

From Llandudno, it is usually easiest to travel to Conwy or Deganwy and begin there. Strong walkers may link routes more ambitiously, though one should never confuse ambition with map-reading.

The ground can be uneven, muddy and exposed. This is not the place for decorative footwear, unless one intends to provide entertainment for passing sheep.

The reward is scale. Conwy Castle below, the estuary opening out, the coast stretching away and the mountains of Eryri gathering themselves to the south. It makes the area feel larger and less tidy than Llandudno’s front would have you believe.

The hill fort at the summit, Caer Bach, is an Iron Age enclosure with defensive earthworks still visible. It preceded the castle below by over a thousand years and chose the same commanding height for the same reasons: anyone who wished to approach had to be seen coming.

It is close to towns, roads and cafes, yet can feel properly open. That combination is very North Wales: civilisation nearby, weather in charge, and a view that could silence a committee.

The walk is typically two to four hours depending on route and pace. It can be combined with a visit to Conwy town and castle for a full day that covers prehistory, medieval fortification and Georgian harbour with minimal planning and maximum variety.

Conwy Mountain is the walk that tells visitors the coast is only the beginning. The polite resort is one chapter. The hills have the better gossip.

Wear appropriate footwear, check the weather forecast and allow more time than the map distance suggests. Mountains are always more themselves than the distances imply.
