Bunkhouses in North Wales

BUNKHOUSES

A bunkhouse is the ultimate way to experience the roughness and bleakness of North Wales – budget self-catering accommodation with an earthy twist. They often contain simple bunks, requiring you to bring your own sleeping back. Some contain cookers, stoves, microwaves, kettles etc, while others are bare rooms with simple beds. Bunkhouses are ideal for those wishing to explore the Llandudno and North Wales area on foot, for backpackers and lovers of the outdoors. Originating in America, bunkhouses were the accommodation of cowboys and farmhands on ranches: usually a large room containing single bunks for sleeping.

Nowadays in the UK, they are as popular as ever for those wishing to experience Great Britain’s less gentle terrain in style. Remember to check:

Pets: Many bunkhouses allow pets. It’s best to plan head though.

Smoking: Does your bunkhouse permit smoking on site?

Sleeping equipment: Some bunkhouses will come supplied with a pillow, mattress and quilt; while others will simply have boards and a simple cushion. Remember to check so you can bring the right things.

Cooking equipment: Is there a stove included? If not you’ll need to bring your own, preferably portable. Many bunkhouses do provide the use of a stove as well as tea making facilities.

Location: Is your bunkhouse conveniently located? Many of them require the use of a car to reach, especially those in rural Snowdonia. It’s important to remember that as you’ll be buying your own food, you want to be close to a shop (shops can be few and far between in the national park).
